Microsoft never distributes windows updates by email.  If you receive any official looking email from what appears to be Microsoft do not open or run the attachment.  Delete it immediately.  It contains a virus.

Guard Against Identity Theft

Do you have a Paypal account?  If so you may be the target of identity theft.  You may get a official looking Paypal email.  It looks official and if you follow the link it asks for critical information including name, mailing address, credit card and bank account numbers on your Paypal account.  Paypal claims they will never ask for this information in an email.  The email will address you by name in the email and not be generic.  If you receive one of these emails, do not answer it and send an email to [email protected].  It is very interesting that the email contains a link to the Security Tips on the Paypal web site that includes the above address.

Hints to keep you computer running smoothly

Some of the most common computer problems are problems with pop-ups, ad ware, Java script, and flash player.  Keep up-to-date with the java and flash player versions and be sure and keep up-to-date on all updates from Microsoft.  Below are links to all of these and others.

  Microsoft Windows Update

To keep up-to-date on Microsoft Windows Updates go to your control panel and click the Windows Update link.  If you have done a new install of Windows these updates are extensive at first.  If you have a high speed connection set windows updates for automatic.  You can also use the Microsoft Windows Update from Microsoft's site.  Access Windows Update from the control panel. This works for Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.  If you have a high speed internet connection it is great to keep auto updates enabled in XP to get them automatically.

  Internet Pop-Ups

Are you having problems with annoying pop-ups when browsing the web?
Try the free pop-up stopper from Panicware.
When using a pop-up stopper remember some web sites do use pop-ups to display information with in their page.  You will need to disable the stopper when browser such pages.

If you have Windows XP and Service Pack 2 installed you don't need a add-on pop-up blocker.  SP2 has one built in.

You should also see this hover button below.  It has a dark blue background and when you mouse over it, it will glow light green.

Not able to see Macromedia flash content on web pages.  Go here to download the latest player.

Run Scandisk and Defragmentation programs in windows at least twice a month.  If you do a lot of downloading and deleting of files on your computer run them weekly. These programs are found under Start Menu>Programs>

If you have Norton System Works run their versions of these programs.

Install and keep anti-virus software up-to-date.
